Your bathroom vanity and sink is an important part of your bathroom décor. The vanity is not only cabinet that you can use to store necessities, it is also a place for your sink to rest. You may choose to have your bathroom vanity match your bedroom vanity. Then again, you might want this piece to shine on its own. The whole bathroom can be designed around the vanity in some cases. Choosing a vanity cabinet is important. You need to keep in mind a few things such as price and the amount of space you have available as well as installation and delivery options.
If you are going to install your bathroom vanity then you will be able to spend more on the cabinet. If you are going to pay someone else to install the cabinet in your bathroom you may find that you can go with a more difficult to work with project but cost will be a bit higher than it would if you had done it yourself.
Do your research. You need to start by deciding what type of cabinet you want. You can make a list of functions that are important to you. Include how much space you have, how much space you need inside the cabinet, what you want to match and if you need shelves or drawers as well as how many doors you need and such. When you look at cabinets ask the sales representatives as many questions as it takes to make you feel comfortable with your choice.
While you are discussing your choices with a sales rep you may also want to ask for pricing and policy information . Jot down a list of questions you may have before you contact the company online, on the phone or go to the store in person. You can find out about warranties and guarantees as well as finding out what materials work best for your situation. If you ask enough questions you will know if you should look for glass, wood, iron, or porcelain products. You should also consider removal of the old vanity cabinet in this research. It may be possible for the cabinet installers to remove the old vanity while they are working on installing the new one.
You will want to keep hardware such as knobs, handles, and faucets in mind. Your budget should include the hardware you will need. You may want to match these to existing themes or start your own theme. Some hardware such as door handles can be purchased in second hand stores and antique shops, others may look better with new hardware. It is not only a matter of functionality, your taste will guide you here more than anything else. Budget may be an issue as well. Some hardware pieces are available for less than a dollar and others will cost more than twenty. While both will have the same functions not all will work for everyone. Stick to your budget and look around if you can’t find what you want at the first place you shop.

Bronze has been used for different reasons for many millennia. The understanding of making of bronze is directly linked with man kinds understanding and progress of the use of metals. It was with bronze that we know of, people first came to understand about the advantage of alloys. The first type of bronze was a crude mixture of copper and arsenic But as time went on there was a better understanding of metals and eventually tin was used.
Not only was the benefit of tin as a stronger alloy discovered, but that it was not unhealthy like arsenic. Even when various civilizations moved to iron or wrought iron, bronze was still popular because it was actually stronger than wrought iron. That is why we can see that even though iron ore was more available than copper, bronze production continued and stronger varieties were made by adding such metals as manganese and phosphorous.
In the beginning of the Bronze Age it was used mainly for the production of weapons and farming tools. But with the passing of time, people got creative and bronze was eventually used for making musical instruments and statues. Some of the first civilizations to use good quality bronze made from tin were Thailand and Persia. Possibly because these were the only place both copper ore was found near tin ore.
So not surprisingly the earliest works of bronze takes place in these countries. One of the main attractive features of bronze is that it tends to expand a little just before setting, thereby filling up the cast and giving it a more finished look. That is the reason why out of all the metals and alloys bronze was the most favored metal for artisans to create any type of art work whether it was just a piece of art to look at or something that had a functional use. Because compared to other metals bronze has a unique rustic beauty to it.
The first time we see oil rubbed bronze cabinet hardware is sometime in the 20th century. But funnily enough it does not always have anything to do with oil or bronze. For example steel can be oxidized using the electrolysis method and then rubbed with a lacquer to give the oiled bronze look. When brass or bronze is treated with black nickel and then polished with oil, that is when you get the real oiled bronze product, but it’s more expensive than electrolyzed steel.

My house has no interior doors. They were all spirited away in a previous life and I have to replace them. I finally found the correct doors and I’m ready to start hanging them. My house is over 100 years old so I’m looking at the old cast iron hinges they sell at so many reproduction hardware stores.
My doors are 1 1/4″ thick. I have found hinges that range from 5″x5″ to 2 1/2″x2 1/2″.
I’m so confused and don’t know what to measure in order to get the right size hinges.
Are there guidelines somewhere for this or do I have to order them in a hit-or-miss fashion?
Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks
go to the home depot, buy some hinges, different sizes and colors to see what looks right. measure them (or look on the tag) then order the size you need online. you can easily return the ones you bought. make sure whatever hinges you buy have removable pins so if you ever need to remove the door you can just pop the pins out. most quality door hinges will be like this. this also makes it easier to install the hinges but make sure you measure exactly!!
Help! I was trying to clean my brass door knobs(they are very old, the ones with skeleton key holes) and the knob turned grey! I don’t know if this is normal? There was a lot of oxidation on the knob before I cleaned it. Can I still get it shiny and looking better? Do you have a good suggestion for a cleaner? Thanks for your input.
Most likely, the problem is organic crud & possibly the remnants of a lacquer coating.
Nice old ones,& easily removed……into the sink w/ plenty of hot water & a good scrub.
That will get the dirt off & you will be able to see any coating that might be left behind.
If there are traces of lacquer, easy enough to get off w/ paint remover.
Some metal cleaners have ammonia or acids which can discolor the surface oxidation.
Brasso as mentioned will eventually cut through heavy “tarnish” but it takes some elbow grease.
Out of the can cleaners need to be removed completely.
Once cleaned, rather than a metal polish, try using auto polishing compound to maintain the shine.
Pink compound for cleaning/ white to maintain the shine.
No chemicals to harm the metal & the wax base gives some protection.
2 ways to go …..all out to polish & buff bright or a lighter polishing to bring up highlights & maintain some of the patina.
Might also try a marine supply store for metal treatments that clean & protect.
Best regards
